Sealift Barge Pond Inlet Nunavut

Description

One of my all-time favourite photos, taken in 1998 in the far northern community of Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik) at the north end of Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. The sea lift barge is one of two or three large boats that bring the bulk of materials needed for the year to this remote location, before the water in Eclipse Sound freezes over. This one was about to deliver a large pallet of food to our door. Although groceries were available, expensively flown in from the south, it was wise to place a yearly order for non-perishables. I was walking home from the school that my wife and I were teaching at, admiring this view, when it finally dawned on me just how spectacular, and unique, that view really was. I dashed the rest of the way home to grab my camera and tripod. I happened to have a roll of slide film in the camera at the time, so this is a scan of that slide. The mist conceals the mountains at the far side of Eclipse Sound, about 35 kilometers away, and the perspective doesn't quite show how much the iceberg (temporarily stuck on the sea floor, and from which a large chunk had already broken away the previous night) completely dwarfs the otherwise fairly large ship. Taken with my first camera, a Pentax Program Plus, with a Pentax smc 70-200mm lens.
